I like the sign and return acknowledgement or it is considered a resignation on the part of the employee. A good follow up would be to schedule a meeting on the contents of the handbook and have a Q & A to address any possible concerns or interpretations the employees have or need. At this meeting have them sign a second form stating that the handbook contents were fully explained to them and they understand what is expected of them when performing their duties.
