This is probably the most important thing in your entire business, in every aspect. 

We have been talking about this forever. Having the right people will get you to the right profit.  We know that the number one most important quality in a company is their ability to find, attract, get onboard, keep and grow the right people.  So the answer to that is – always be recruiting.  A.B.R. – Always Be Recruiting!  You know how we say “always be closing”?  We also say “always be recruiting”.  I want you to hire hungry, humble, and smart people.  You want smart and quick people.  Certainly smarter than both of us!  Which isn’t too hard to do!

You want people who have your shared values within your organization.  You want to make certain that you lose the losers in your organization.  Have them, as we say, be successful somewhere else.  Hopefully for your competition!  And then certainly you always want to keep and grow the right people.  So lose the losers, and keep and grow the right people.

I always tell my clients, “You think you’re in the landscaping business, but you’re really in the people business, doing landscaping”.  Let me give you some tips.  You’re going to need to have good culture.  Always look for ways to build a solid, positive culture.  One of those ways is to be efficient.  Secondly, is to be safe.  People appreciate it when you look after their home and you’re being safe.  Reward those who are really doing well.  Don’t hold back.  Give them the dollars!  Because then they know that you appreciate them too.  Tell them that you appreciate them as well.  You should always show people, not just tell people.  Sometimes you can tell them, but they still don’t know.  You have to go and show them so they can see it being done.

Also make sure you teach people.  Have a learning organization – teach soft skills and hard skills.  In other words, technically they need to know how to do things correctly.  Also, leaders lead by example.   You know, I heard a statement once that I thought was pretty powerful, “When people look at leaders- they hear their words, but they believe their behavior”.  So behave like a leader!  It’s very important to lead by example.

Now here we are – we have the profit puzzle.  How important it is to have the right people, in the right place, doing the right things, doing the right things right, and treating them right.  Then guess what?  You get the right results.  Like the right profit.

So go out there and get the right results, with the right people!
