Ed and Bill, I want to say your videos have been very helpful and informative. Just started my business part-time in 2009 while still working as a full time police officer. I finally had to retire from the police department last year due to fact that my business grew to the point where I was no longer getting any sleep in order to keep up. I have just started hiring employees on a more permanent scale this year. Only have 6 so far, but we have been bombarded with job request do to our quality of work and I need to have more help, but it seems to be a handful to keep up with, especially with all the regulations and laws. I am lucky to have my daughter running my office and keeping the HR issues somewhat up to date. Your training videos have been priceless in helping me to learn about things that I have not had time to do theses days. Employee’s, I need as much help in this area as possible. How do I find qualified, honest, and clean record employees in the landscape industry. Every application has criminal backgrounds, suspended licenses, and not qualified in what they say they are. My main worry is how to stay legal and do things the right way, (this I will not bend on)and yet compete against those who I know are cutting corners.

Ted, first of all congratulations on stepping out into your own business full time. It’s also admirable that you want to do things correctly and legally. Finding, hiring, keeping people these days is one of the biggest challenges for landscape contractors nationwide and that is why we have addressed it head on. I hate to be self serving but in lieu of your question I must. Next month we are introducing the new Harvest On Line Academy, the membership is only $30.00 a month and for PLANET members it’s $25.00. We just did an entire lesson on recruiting that addresses this subject and you will find it there. Also, we have on our web site, the Harvest Kit which contains a book written by Bill called “The Harvest Way for Recruiting & Hiring The Right People”, this also has DVD’s of Bill and myself reviewing the main points of the book and a workbook with exercises. At various times we have made our Kit available for half price so if you don’t want to pay the full freight keep your eye’s open for that. If you purchase the Kit you can talk with Bill one on one where you can ask him specific questions on how to find, hire and get on board the right people. I don’t know if you are aware but Bill was the VP for HR with Valley Crest when they had some 6500 employees. He has reviewed thousands of resumes, interviewed thousands of people and hired hundreds. Bill is on vacation this week but to keep things moving for you why don’t you email him at [email protected] and ask some of those same questions and I’m sure he will be in touch early next week. We would love to help you find those, “right people” so you can grow and prosper. Thanks for writing.
